Urgent travel

Home Affairs has not issued temporary passports since 1 September 2014. It issues emergency travel certificates in emergencies, such as a passport lost or stolen abroad. An emergency travel certificate only lets you travel from the country where it was issued back to South Africa 1.

BusinessTech reported in October 2022 that the emergency travel certificate fee stayed at R140 when passport fees rose on 1 November 2022 2.

Applying from abroad

You apply in person at the nearest South African embassy or consulate. Home Affairs estimates that applications lodged outside South Africa take at least six to eight months. You must fill in a determination of citizenship form, DHA-529, as well 1.

BusinessTech reported in October 2022 that applications made abroad carry a 100% premium, which made a standard passport R1,200 and a maxi R2,400 at that time 2. The Home Affairs passport page does not list an overseas fee, so check with the mission where you apply.

How to apply and photos

You apply in person at a Home Affairs office with live capture, at a participating bank branch, or through eHomeAffairs. You must be 16 or older and have an identity document before you apply for an adult passport 1.

Bring two colour photos that meet the passport photo rules. You do not need them at an office that captures your image digitally. For a child, both parents normally attend with their IDs and the child's birth certificate 1.

Online applications start at the eHomeAffairs portal linked from the Home Affairs home page 3.
