Fee change on 1 July 2026
The Passport Seva home page carries a notice that passport application fees were revised with effect from 1 July 2026 and tells applicants to check the revised fee before paying 1.
Free Press Journal reported that the Ministry of External Affairs published the Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2026, dated 20 June 2026, on 25 June 2026 3. Gulf News reported the same fee figures 4. Tatkaal and other rules
- Under the older official sheet, the Tatkaal fee is paid on top of the application fee 2.
- A 10% discount applies to fresh applications, not reissues, for children up to age 8 and senior citizens over 60 4.
- Fees are not refundable 2.
- Gulf News reported that a 36-page passport for a child under 15 is now valid for five years or until the child turns 18, whichever comes first 4.
- Tatkaal applicants must check the eligibility rules and bring a signed undertaking to the passport office 1.
How to pay
Online payment is mandatory when you book an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra, Post Office Passport Seva Kendra or passport office. You can pay by Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card, internet banking, or an SBI bank challan 5.
How to apply
You register and apply on the official portal, passportindia.gov.in, or on the Passport Seva mobile app. Indians abroad apply through Indian embassies and consulates, which Passport Seva links to from its home page 1.
The ministry warns about fake sites that charge extra for filling in forms and booking appointments. It names sites such as indiapassport.org and passport-seva.in and says the only official site is passportindia.gov.in 1.
