How to pay
At an acceptance facility you pay the application fee by check or money order made out to "U.S. Department of State", with the applicant's name and date of birth in the memo line. The US$35 acceptance fee is paid to the facility, which sets its own payment methods 1.
For renewal by mail you pay by check or money order to the Department of State. Online renewal takes a credit or debit card. A passport agency takes Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover cards, some debit and prepaid cards, and contactless payments such as Apple Pay and Google Pay 1.
Processing times
As of the State Department page updated 5 October 2026, routine processing takes 4 to 6 weeks and expedited processing takes 2 to 3 weeks. Mail is extra. Allow up to 2 weeks for your application to reach the State Department and up to 2 weeks for the passport to reach you 2.
For urgent travel you need an appointment at a passport agency and proof of international travel within 14 calendar days. The State Department says the busy season runs from late winter through summer and suggests applying between October and December 2.
How to apply online or in person
First-time adults and all children under 16 apply in person with Form DS-11 at an acceptance facility 1.
You can renew online if your last passport was valid for 10 years, was issued when you were at least 25, expires within 1 year or expired less than 5 years ago, and you are not changing your name or sex. You must be in a US state or territory, and you must not be travelling for at least 6 weeks. Online renewal costs the same (US$130 for a book), takes a card and cannot be expedited. The only official online renewal site is opr.travel.state.gov 3.
