Urgent and temporary passports

Italy has no fixed express fee. If you have an urgent reason linked to work, health, study or travel, you can go straight to your local police headquarters (Questura) with proof, following the rules on its website 1.

A temporary passport is an emergency document valid for up to 12 months, with 16 pages and no chip 3. The police page lists a €5.20 payment for it 3. That page still refers to payment by postal slip, so check the amount with your Questura.

Extra fees and exemptions

  • Home delivery by insured post: €9.88, paid in cash on delivery 1
  • Payments made by postal slip before 1 December 2025 are still accepted 1
  • Some groups listed in article 19 of law 1185/1967 are exempt from both payments 1

How to apply

Book an appointment on the Agenda online at passaportonline.poliziadistato.it using SPID or CIE 1. You apply at a passport office at a Questura or police station where you live 1.

Bring the forms from your booking email, a valid ID with a photocopy, one recent ICAO photo, the €42.70 receipt, the €73.50 stamp and your old passport 1. When you get an email that the passport is ready, you collect it from the office 1.

Applying from abroad

Italians abroad apply at an Italian embassy or consulate 1. The police page sends you to the Foreign Ministry for those rules and does not list consular fees 1.
